The MAM-A Difference

MAM-A Inc. has developed a reputation for quality that is un-equaled in the CD industry. Because of their patented Phthalocyanine (thalo-sy-a-neen) dye and their attention to detail in the manufacturing process, MAM offers recordable media that is more reliable and longer lived than any other recording media available today. If you store it on MAM-A CD-R, you can be sure that you can reliably retrieve it for a long time to come. In fact, MAM conservatively estimate that 'MAM-A Gold CD-R' will last in excess of 300 years when stored at room temperature.  No other recording media that we know of can offer that kind of reliability (tapes don't come close and even "stamped" CDs will last 5-25 years at best).

The MAM-A Advantage

MAM-A CD-R media benefits from a consistency and process control which no other manufacturer can equal. Since MAM don't rely on third-parties to provide our technology, production facilities, or raw materials, MAM-A CD-R customers know that each component and each step in the manufacturing process has been subjected to the most rigorous quality controls in the industry. Every MAM-A CD-R is warranted for life. No other CD-R media manufacturer offers a warranty of this strength.

Every MAM-A CD-R is certified for use with all high speed recorders up to 52X. There are two reasons for this. Firstly, MAM-A's molding process results in discs that are flatter than the competition. While all discs are slightly warped, if they are warped beyond a certain tolerance they cannot be used for high speed recording. Secondly, the unique characteristics of the Phthalocyanine dye simply works better in high speed writers than other dyes. Some of the key parameters to judge CD quality actually improve at higher speeds with MAM CD-R.

High Speed Compatibility

Phthalocyanine dye is more sensitive to powered laser light and more conducive to high speed recording than other dyes. It is altered more quickly and sharply by the laser. Therefore it guarantees very precise recording at speeds 2X-52X with any type of recorder, and errorless read back by any type of player. Since MAM have not changed their dye formulation in over 5 years, drive manufacturers are able to easily configure their units for the dye. That's why MAM CD-R is compatible with every writer & reader on the market.  A CD-R that we manufactured 5 years ago will perform the same as the ones made today. Most of our competitors need to re-formulate for different speeds, requiring drive manufacturers to accommodate multiple variations.

CD-R Dyes: How to Tell What's What

You’ve seen the references to "gold dye", "green dye", "blue dye", "silver on gold", "silver on silver" as descriptions of CD-R media. It gets rather confusing when trying to understand which is which, even with samples right in front of you.

This way of describing CD-R media originated innocently enough when the industry was younger and gold CD-R media was the only type available. At that time, you could pick up a CD-R, turn it over, and see either a green color or gold color…simple enough.

Much of the confusion started when silver CD-Rs were introduced, changing the apparent color of the dye. Cyanine (blue) dye appears green on gold media and blue on silver media.  Phthalocyanine appears transparent on gold media, but light green on silver media. The term "Gold on Gold" is used because the disc looks gold on both sides.

There are three types of dye currently in use for CD-R media:

*Mitsui Chemicals Inc. holds a worldwide patent on phthalocyanine dye.
**Not in widespread use

Gold DVD+/-R

In order to meet consumer demands for high capacity, long life data storage, MAM-A Inc. has developed a Gold Archive Grade, recordable DVD media. The media is capable of storing any type of data or video content and is available in -R and +R formats for 4.7 GB of total storage space. This product uses 24 karat gold as the reflective layer, offering maximum resistance to chemical breakdown -- one of the major causes of disc failure. The MAM-A Gold Archive Grade DVD is offered as the long awaited companion to the MAM Archive Grade Gold CD-R which has earned a reputation for the best longevity of any storage media.

Superior Dye Formulation

Unlike other DVD-R manufacturers, MAM-A has developed a brand new organic dye formulation used in the production of every MAM-A DVD-Recordable disc.

Superior Longevity

MAM-A Gold DVD-R discs have a life expectancy rating in excess of 100 years - ideal for archival use.

Global Compatability

Once written to, a MAM-A DVD-R disc adapts the same playback characteristics as a DVD-ROM disc, rendering it compatible with the world-wide base of both DVD video players and DVD-ROM drives which support DVD Recordable media.

Superior Physical Strength

DVD-Recordable discs are manufactured by bonding two 0.6 mm “halves” together to make one 1.2mm DVD-R; each half, capable of containing its own recording, reflective and protective layers.  The adhesive structure of MAM-A DVD-R is unique to our discs and has proven to have a higher bonding strength than other discs.  Physical tests to this bonding layer resulted in flawless results of the MAM-A DVD-Rs, which experience no signs of peeling or damage to the bonding layer.
