Transfers and Conversions
In effect when you take a VHS video and transfer it to say a DVD format you are doing a conversion of one form of video to another. The same applies to many other kinds of media including audio cassettes and the like.
Primarily we tend to convert older formats to newer DIGITAL formats.
This for two good reasons, firstly today's (and tomorrows) common formats are digital, and so digital forms are readily viewed on today's technology, namely computers and CD/DVD players. Secondly once the contend is digitized it is effectively locked in a time capsule, it will no get any older, that is even if it is copied a hundred times, each copy will be an identical copy of the original digital file.
Unlike analog recordings like that of cassettes or VHS tapes, that lose quality each time they are copied. (Grandfather, Father, Son... each a bit lower quality).
